CHAPTER TEN

Alex stood on a raised circular platform.

In the shadows in front of him were the outlines of several figures. A console waited before him with a handprint icon that pulsed green every few seconds. It was like a giant beacon saying, “Put your hand here.”

Sam had shown him the power of the consoles. Only this time, he would be in charge. Alex didn’t hesitate as he approached. This was what he’d been waiting for. The feeling of being in charge of his own destiny.

He shoved his hand on the console and laughed. “Papa has a brand new bag.”

The console hummed as it scanned his hand. “Please enter your character name and select a companion.”

His first instinct was to look over his companion options, but they were all shrouded in mystery. Before he could select one, he had to enter his name. He’d spent hours thinking of the perfect name, but now that he was in the game, the one he’d chosen didn’t feel right.

This wasn’t some random character. It was an extension of himself. He would keep his first name but ditch the last. Alex Sweeny sounded like a budding young serial killer.

“What’s it going to be?” His mind drew a blank.

He typed his first name into the system and stared at the screen. “Come on, you’ve got this.”

Alex Littlebone.

“Fuck no.” That made it sound like he had the smallest dick in the world.

Littlebone was one of those names a fighter would get after an epic battle. He could see it now. It was winter, and their group was camped by a river. The enemy sprang from the darkness as Alex stood from popping a squat. He ditched the pants in favor of a sword and somehow ended up in the river. Dragging himself pantsless from nearly frozen water would most likely result in some serious shrinkage.

Hence, Littlebone.

Just because a last name came with a backstory didn’t make it a good one. He wanted to be cooler than Littlebone. The plus side here was he could use whatever name he wanted. No one would force it on him. He didn’t want to squander the opportunity.

He deleted the word Littlebone and put his brain back to work. Bigbone. Made him sound like a tool. Ugh. This should have been easy. He wanted to sound cool. Something that would bring fear to his enemies and inspire his friends. He was a warrior. A man destined for the front lines. He could be whoever he wanted to be. Who was it?

Alex…

It was right there on the tip of his tongue. “Alex DoomReaper.”

Better. Much better, but not quite right.

“I’m not so much of a reaper.” He slipped his knuckle dusters on. “More of an overzealous boxer.”

Hmmm.

He typed it out. “I think that feels right.”

The system responded to his command. “Please confirm the name Alex Nimblefist.”

Shit, I did it again.

Alex deleted the last name and tried again. Nimblefist was worse than Littlebone. He could do this. He tapped in another name but needed to hear it spoken aloud before he knew if it was right.
